Historic site dedicated Saturday

Something very old is Arizona’s newest Historic Landmark. KJZZ’s Al Macias reports the Murray Springs Clovis Site in southern Arizona will be dedicated Saturday morning.

Thirteen thousand years ago, give or take a few decades, hunters took down a mammoth, a bison and possibly other animals during hunts just east of where Sierra Vista is now.

Fast forward to 1966 and two archaeologists from the University of Arizona discovered the site. For the next several years paleontologists and other researchers excavated the location.  They found the bones of many animals as well as thousands of stone tools and other artifacts.

Interior Secretary Ken Salazar designated the site a historic landmark last year, recognizing Murray Springs for its special scientific values.
