State lawmakers this week will take up two proposals dealing with school safety. From Phoenix, KJZZ’s Mark Brodie has more.

One measure would allow school boards to allow teachers or administrators to carry concealed weapons, if the school has fewer than 600 students, does not have a school resource officer and is more than 30 minutes and 20 miles from a law enforcement facility.

Another proposal would ask voters to send excess Clean Elections money to schools, to pay for school safety programs, including school resource officers, and more counselors and behavioral health services. That measure already narrowly won the approval of a senate committee -- both proposals will be before that chamber’s appropriations committee on Tuesday.

Several other school safety measures have so far failed to get hearings at the state capitol this year, including one supported by Attorney General Tom Horne, which would allow one person in every school to carry a gun, after undergoing training.
