Gov. Doug Ducey isn't worried that a disaster, natural or otherwise, is going to leave Arizona without a leader.

Sen. Judy Burges pointed out that when the President gives the State of the Union address, one member of the Cabinet does not attend just in case something happens that wipes out everyone else. So she proposed writing something similar into Arizona law: When the governor is at an event, the secretary of state, attorney general or treasurer cannot be there.

"It was a cautionary measure. What if something were to happen? Who would we have to step up?" Burges said.

But Ducey vetoed the measure Thursday. Gubernatorial press aide Daniel Scarpinato said his boss believes it's not necessary.

"DPS obviously tracks any threats. And they know if there's anything to be concerned about and are keeping our statewide elected officials safe at all times," he said.

Scarpinato said there's a lot of "bigger things" going on.
