The Arizona Senate has voted against a bill that would have removed the state's strict ban on the use of aerial fireworks.

The bill would have allowed the sale and use of some aerial rockets and also legalize firecrackers. Right now, Arizonans can only have things like smoke snakes, fountains and ground spinners, but anything that explodes and launches is prohibited.

The legislation passed the House with a one vote margin, but it didn’t have enough momentum to make it through the Senate. That’s despite Senator Steve Smith’s best effort to drum up support.

"It’s called the 4th of July," said Smith, R-Maricopa. "If you don’t like fireworks on the Fourth of July or New Years, go to another country."

In 2010, former Gov. Jan Brewer signed a law allowing only so-called "safe and sane" fireworks to be sold in Arizona.
