A lot of Valley residents spotted what they described as a red and green fireball streaking across the sky Saturday night. Marvin Percha of the National Weather Service has confirmed it was a meteor.

“They all of a sudden look very bright and then burn up, but they certainly look a lot closer than they really are,” Percha said. “In this case they were seeing them in west Texas too, so it was a pretty wide area that people were seeing the meteor.”

Percha said people were most likely witnessing the meteor burning up and the colors they saw were likely the minerals in the rock as they were heated very rapidly upon entering the atmosphere. He said that happened about 200 miles above the earth.
