The successful fundraising so far by supporters of Proposition 123 has left state Treasurer Jeff DeWit to see if he can mount an opposition campaign.

On Monday, supporters said they had already collected $1.75 million for the May 17 ballot measure to add $3.5 billion over the next decade to state education funding.

They are benefiting from major donors, like half a million dollars from Go Daddy founder Bob Parsons and his wife, $150,000 from Greater Phoenix Leadership, and $100,000 from the Helios Education Foundation. DeWit sniffed at all the money raised so far by proponents.

Jeff DeWit said he hasn't found anyone who has actually read through Prop 123 and still supports it. "The people that like it only hear the talking points. And they think it's good for schools. And they think it's not going to hurt taxpayers. And they're wrong on both counts, which they realize when they read the thing," he said.

DeWit has not mounted a counter fund. "Well, I have to imagine there are some smart people out there that have actually read this thing and understand what they're getting into, and will come around and fund the other side," he said.
