A possible Phoenix bus strike has been put on hold for now.

The city’s Public Transit Department says negotiations will continue Tuesday between Transdev, one of its contracted bus service providers, and members of the Amalgamated Transit Union.

Officials with the local Amalgamated Transit Union warned of a possible strike after accusing Transdev of unfair labor practices.

Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton has been involved in working with the two parties in negotiations. He said the pending strike is a disappointment and demanded both sides continue negotiating.

“Stay at the table. Don’t let their short term, you know, anger about one element or another get the best of them,” Stanton said. “Stay at the table and don’t leave until it’s resolved. It’s simply too important to Phoenix, and the people of Phoenix that this thing get solved in an amicable fashion.”

While an agreement has not yet been reached, Phoenix bus service continues to operate normally at this time.

Bob Bean is the president of the local Amalgamated Transit Union.

“We will always talk. We will not walk away,” Bean said.

A strike would affect 34 bus routes in the city and disrupt bus service throughout Phoenix with thousands of college football fans expected to be in the city for Monday’s national championship game in Glendale.
