The U.S. Department of Education has new recommendations for how to improve education for Native American students. The ideas are included in a new report, following a nationwide listening tour.

The tour was part of the White House Initiative on American Indian and Alaska Native Education and included feedback from students, parents and educators. There are separate recommendations for local and federal governments. They include exploring the potentially harmful effects of Native American-themed mascots on Native youth, supporting Native American languages and training educators to recognize and address bullying.

The listening tour took place in 2014 in nine spots across the country, but none in the Southwest.
