Phoenix Bus Drivers Want To Be City Employees, May Strike

A bus strike could be looming in Phoenix. Dozens of unionized bus drivers and other activists turned out at city hall Tuesday to protest what the French-owned bus company, Transdev, calls its last and final contract offer.

The workers said they’re not upset about the wages and benefits in the proposed agreement. Bob Bean of the Amalgamated Transit Workers Union said they’re upset about what they claim is the unfair way the company is treating its workers.

“They knew what they were going into when they bid for this contract. It’s not my fault that they underbid the contract to make sure they got the contract but they bid it knowing full well what was in this contract and now they’re trying to back out of it," Bean said. "And, I ain’t standing for that because they knew what they were walking into when they did this."

The workers want the city to see what’s really going on and to end the practice of contracting bus service to private for-profit companies. Instead, they want to be city employees.

Workers are voting this week on whether to walk out. They could hit the picket lines as early as Friday.
