Arizona, California Water Disputes Historically Tense

This summer, the headline of an article in the Arizona Daily Star asked simply, “Is California Trying to Take Our Water?” Environmental reporter Tony Davis, who wrote the story, said a big component of that question was the secrecy surrounding a bill being worked on by California Senator Dianne Feinstein.

There is some precedent for Arizona and California to have some neighborly disputes about water. In 1934, Arizona’s governor sent the National Guard to observe the construction of Parker Dam, which the state opposed. But, are the two states on better water terms now? To find out, we spoke with Ted Cooke, interim general manager of the Central Arizona Project.
