Initiative disqualified from ballot

June 26, 2012

Arizona Secretary of State Ken Bennett has disqualified an initiative from November’s ballot, because of a problem with petition language. From Phoenix, KJZZ’s Mark Brodie has more.

MARK BRODIE: On Monday, supporters of the Quality Education and Jobs campaign turned in more than 290,000 signatures. But, the Secretary of State’s office says it ran random checks on those petitions, and found the language on them did not match the official version the campaign had pre-filed with the office. The campaign’s chair has called the problem a “clerical error.”  An announcement last week that the campaign would file its signatures also mentioned it had retained former Arizona Supreme Court Chief Justice Stanley Feldman to handle potential legal challenges. The measure would essentially extend the one cent sales tax voters approved in 2010. That’s set to expire next May. The money would be allocated to education, health care and other services.
