After nearly 60 years in business, the last Bill Johnson's Big Apple restaurant is shutting its doors.

The Arizona's chains original location at 37th and Van Buren streets, which opened in 1956, will close May 24.

Michael Braden, president of Bill Johnson's Restaurants Inc., posted a statement announcing the closure on Facebook earlier this week.

"Our financial challenges and struggles over the years have left us in a position where we can no longer compete in our market to our own satisfaction," Braden said in the statement to customers, dated May 17.

At its peak, Bill Johnson's Big Apple had multiple locations, including Goodyear, Glendale, Mesa and north Phoenix.
