For more than a decade, Medicare spending on hospice has expanded to about $15 billion. In 2013, nearly half of Medicare beneficiaries who passed away had received hospice care.

Medicare officials are starting to look more closely at whether the funds are being spent properly and are within the hospice-related requirements.

We spoke with Gautam Gowrisankaran, an economics professor at the University of Arizona.
