A racehorse was killed early this morning in Buckeye when a tractor-trailer and a truck pulling a horse trailer collided.

The Department of Public Safety says the collision took place as the eastbound truck pulling the horse trailer was slowing to exit Interstate 10.

Spokesman Raul Garcia says the impact of the crash caused the doors of the horse trailer to open, allowing six horses that were headed to Turf Paradise to get out.

DPS officers were able to round up five of the horses, but the sixth ran across I-10 and through the median, before where it was hit by a westbound SUV and killed instantly.

Garcia says the driver of the big rig was cited for failure to control a vehicle to avoid a collision. None of the people in the vehicles were injured.
