New figures from the U.S. Census Bureau show Arizona among the states with the steepest declines in home ownership in the last decade.

The states with the largest declines in home ownership are those that underwent a housing boom followed by a severe bust over the last decade, causing many to lose their homes to foreclosure.

Nevada topped the list with a near 10 percent decline in home ownership. It was followed by North Dakota, Minnesota, Alabama and Arizona, with a decline of 8.1 percent in ownership from the peak year of 2006, when the rate of home ownership was 71.6 percent, to last year, when it had dropped to 63.5 percent.

The Las Vegas and Phoenix metro areas showed some of the largest declines in the Western U.S., with Vegas registering a 10.7 percent dip in home ownership and Phoenix right behind at 10.6 percent.
