Betty Smithey, 69, the nation’s longest-serving female inmate, was released from an Arizona prison Monday. Smithey, who served 49 years in Goodyear’s Perryville State Prison, was convicted of the murder of 15-month-old Sandy Gerberick of Phoenix in 1963.
The Arizona Supreme Court is set to rule today on the appeal of Isiah Patterson. Patterson was sentenced to death in 2009 in the fatal stabbing of his girlfriend in Mesa. Former Representative Gabby Giffords has moved home to Tucson. She had been undergoing six to eight hours of therapy a day at a Houston facility after she was shot in the head in January 2011.Her husband, retired astronaut Mark Kelly, told the Arizona Daily Star that Giffords will continue rehabilitation in Tucson.
