The Veterans Affairs department announced a new effort Friday to clear a backlog of veterans waiting for decisions on their applications for disability benefits to help those veterans who’ve been waiting the longest to get benefits sooner.

The Phoenix Suns are looking for a new general manager. The team has let its GM go after the second-worst season in the club’s history.  Lance Blanks has served as Suns GM since August 2010, coming to the team after stints with the Cleveland Cavaliers and San Antonio Spurs.

Pinal County’s top prosecutor wants his county to stop processing permits for medical marijuana dispensaries.  Pinal County Attorney Lando Voyles has told the Pinal County Board of Supervisors he is recommending against county workers accepting, processing or issuing permits for marijuana sales or cultivation.

One man is dead, another in critical condition, after a dirt bike hit another vehicle over the weekend in Gilbert. Joaquinn Enriquez of the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office says alcohol may have been a factor in the incident.

Arizona Attorney General Tom Horne may be facing a challenger in the Republican Primary next year. That challenge could come from Mark Brnovich, a former state and federal prosecutor who currently heads the Arizona Gaming Department.

Law enforcement agencies from across Arizona have been involved in an effort to bring in fugitives with outstanding felony warrants, over the last week. The effort was coordinated by the US Marshals Service, according to spokesman Fred Freeman.

Arizona Game and Fish officials said 15 Quagga mussels have been found by scuba divers at Lake Powell’s popular Wahweap boat marina.  The invasive species look similar to a clam. They multiply very quickly and clog waterways, plus they eat all of the food that fish and other aquatic life need to survive.

Grand Canyon Railway is celebrating Earth Day today by reducing its carbon footprint.  The 90-year-old locomotive will take tourists on a trip from Williams to the canyon using vegetable oil to fire the steam engine.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is facing lawsuits, because it missed its own deadline to issue final rules to reduce pollution from coal-fired power plants in Arizona and other states. The goal is to clean up particulates that contribute to haze over Grand Canyon and other national parks.

The former chairman of the Tohono O'odham Nation has died. The death of Augustine B. Lopez Sr. was announced Friday by his southern Arizona Tribe. Neither Lopez’s age nor cause of death was released, but a short bio was made public by tribal officials.

A Casa Grande woman has been sentenced to two and a half years in federal prison for tax fraud. In addition to the prison time, a federal judge sentenced 30-year old Shaneika Earline Sims to three years of supervised release.
