Electronic cigarette businesses have been popping up all over the Valley.

For as much rancor as Phoenix’s temporary food tax has generated, public hearings on the issue have not been well-attended. As of Wednesday afternoon, the city had received 14 public comments over the course of nine meetings.
The Arizona Board of Regents is asking for a nearly 15 percent hike
in next year’s budget for the state’s three universities and the Board
of Regents itself. The regents said the nearly $100 million increase
does not make up for the massive cuts made by the legislature during the
recession, but that budget may not make it through intact.

As the shutdown of the federal government enters its second
day, Gov. Jan Brewer says she and her staff are keeping the pressure on Washington to break the
logjam. The governor says both sides are to blame and that there are several
places where the shutdown is impacting Arizona.
Arizona farmers are upset with Congress for not approving an extension to the Farm Bill before the government shutdown. Some farmers are now worried about getting government loans for next year’s crops.
China has often been accused of stealing information and technology from other countries, but now some Chinese entrepreneurs are blatantly “borrowing” from the United States. An Arizona firm is helping them learn more about the American auction industry.
The federal government
shutdown has furloughed employees, forced some agency websites to go dark,
and delayed funding for social services. The standoff is likely to hurt needy
of Arizona’s 42,000 federal employees are considered essential and will still
be showing up to work -- people like members of the military and border agents.
Another court has given the green light for Arizona lawmakers to
issue what amount to public education funding vouchers to parents to educate
their kids at any private or parochial school they want. Parents of students
with special needs and those in schools with a ‘D’ or lower rating, get what
are called empowerment scholarships, amounting to 90 percent of state aid.
Arizona’s recovery has moved from mediocre to okay. That is the word from economists Friday who spoke about the world, national and state economies at the Phoenix Chamber of Commerce Annual Economic Outlook Breakfast.
Maricopa County Sheriff’s deputies have arrested 20 more
workers at a Phoenix janitorial business for identity theft. Sheriff Joe Arpaio
said deputies conducted the raid at Proserve, the same company it raided in
August, arresting four suspects for stealing IDs.
The budget impasse in Washington
has put Arizona’s
military installations into a partial shutdown. At Fort Huachuca in Sierra Vista, spokeswoman
Tanja Linton says about the vast majority of the 3,600 civilian workers on the
base personnel have been furloughed.
The weekend is over, and that means some
freeway closures are also gone. That includes the construction work over the Loop
101 in the East Valley. The Department of Transportation is
closer to completing the Galveston Street Bicycle and Pedestrian Bridge over
the 101 Price Freeway.
