When Paul Penzone replaces Joe Arpaio as Maricopa County sheriff, he will inherit the many civil lawsuits against the sheriff. That includes the ongoing case that determined the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office racially profiled Latinos.
Mesa voters on Tuesday defeated Question 1, which would have added four-tenths of a percent to the city’s sales tax; the money would have gone to police and fire departments, as well as to help bring a five-acre ASU campus to downtown Mesa.
Peoria Proposition 400 would have permanently raised Peoria’s sales tax by four tenths of a cent, bringing in about $17 million more a year. Surprise’s $63 million bond would have funded nine different public service projects over the next five years.
