Republican House Speaker Andy Tobin is taking up the $8.8 billion state budget passed by the Arizona Senate, but says his effort to reach a deal with the governor on Medicaid have failed. Tobin assigned the package of 10 Senate budget bills to the Appropriations Committee yesterday.

The Arizona Department of Transportation has released a new map that identifies three possible routes for its dream project, a proposed commuter rail service linking Phoenix and Tucson. ADOT plans to narrow it down to a final train route by early next year.

State health officials say about nine of every 10 Arizonans now lives in an area with a medical marijuana dispensary. The state Department of Health Services says 47 dispensaries have been inspected and approved to operate and that so far 35 of those are open and operating.

At the end of June, the state transportation board decided that part of Arizona State Route 260 West of Interstate 17 needed to be widened at a cost of more than $65 million.
