The Arizona Supreme Court says it will give lawmakers another chance to argue they do not have to obey a voter mandate to increase funding for public schools. The 2000 voter-approved law hiked the state sales tax by six-tenths of a cent.

A large mulch fire is still smoking in Laveen, nearly 24 hours after the blaze broke out. When the fire began yesterday afternoon south of Phoenix, dozens of firefighters responded. No homes or structures are considered in danger, but Ben Davis of the Maricopa County Air Quality Department said local air quality has been affected by a large, dark cloud.

City officials report progress combating violent crime, vandalism and prostitution in West Phoenix.That part of town has struggled with those issues for years. In fact, if you look at a police map from this March, pockets of violent crime still glow bright red in West Phoenix, but an annual city report from the region does show some good news, including a 14 percent reduction in violent crime since 2005.

Tucson City Council passed two gun control ordinances Wednesday. The ordinances are opposed by gun rights advocates who say they violate an individual’s constitutional rights.One measure would fine anyone in Tucson $100 if they fail to report to police the loss or theft of a gun within 48 hours from the time it went missing.

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio has responded -- via YouTube -- to a court order blocking his agency from conducting immigration sweeps and using race as a factor in traffic stops. The sheriff implied the failure was at the federal level.

Officials with a Southern Arizona National Park say two men have come forward and are cooperating with an investigation into cactus vandalism there. Late last week, at least one saguaro cactus was knocked over and cut in half at Saguaro National Park in Tucson.

Arizona State University has released its top 10 new species list for 2013. The list includes a glow-in-the-dark cockroach and the smallest vertebrate on Earth, a tiny frog. The creatures on the list were selected by Arizona State University's International Institute for Species Exploration.

More people statewide were charged with drunk driving over the Memorial Day weekend compared to last year, and the Governor’'s Office of Highway Safety is concerned. Director Alberto Gutier said he would like to see the number of traffic stops go up and the number of DUI arrests go down, but just the opposite happened this Memorial Day.
