will be keeping their coach, even as their ownership situation remains in flux. Dave Tippett has agreed to a long-term
contract extension with the team. The Coyotes have made the playoffs three
times in his four seasons as coach.

The Supreme Court’s decision to return a Texas affirmative action case to a lower court will not impact Arizonan schools. Arizonans will not be impacted. Arizona State University spokesman, Skip Derra said Arizona voters amended the state constitution in 2010 to end the use of affirmative action.

Last weekend’s high temperatures had Valley residents reaching for the thermostat. Because of overnight lows in the high 80s and extreme day-time temperatures, Salt River Project spokesman Jeff Lane said the company reported record-setting energy use.

The anticipated merger of American Airlines and Tempe-based U.S. Airways has many in the Valley worried about the effect on the economy, considering the combined airline is going to be headquartered in Dallas, but analyst Holly Hegeman said Phoenix may be used as a hub to the West Coast, a significant benefit to the Valley.

Really, an ostrich? North Carolina paleontologists found that the soft tissue inside the thigh bone of a 65 million year-old unearthed T-Rex skeleton looked identical to that of an ostrich.

Attorneys for those in the Deferred Action Program are
back in court, in an effort to force Arizona
to grant their clients driver's licenses. The licenses have been denied by
Governor Brewer under a state law that says people have to prove they're
authorized to be in the country to get a license.

State police in Phoenix have seized a load of heroin worth about $1.5 million. It is the agency’s biggest heroin bust in memory, said Department of Public Safety spokesman Bart Graves.
The largest heroin bust in Arizona DPS memory occured when 60 pounds of the drug were found in three West Phoenix homes.

We now have three outlet malls close by, two of which have opened in the last 12 months, and that raises some questions.

woman. 48-year-old David Simpson was arrested in Bath, NY
after Sheriff Joe Arpaio says he became attached to convicted murderer Jodi
Arias during her trial, and sent tweets to the victims.

Arizona students entering third grade this year are the
first group of kids that may be held back because of their reading level. More than 18,000 children are at risk of repeating third grade. For the past three years, the Arizona State Board of
Education prepared schools across the state to make sure that children can read
at an acceptable level at third grade.

A DPS officer and his wife face multiple years in prison after being convicted by a Santa Cruz County jury on conspiracy, money
laundering and theft charges. Arizona Attorney General Tom Horne says Horacio
and Carmen Lomelil were found guilty of taking checks from her employer,
Nogales-based Sierra Seed, and depositing the money in their personal checking
account, over a five year period.

Some of the first medical marijuana dispensaries the state licensed will get more time to open their doors. The Department of Health Services had given dispensaries a year to open saying their authorizations would expire unless they met the deadline, but attorney Paul Conant filed suit to stop that saying some of his clients could not comply, in part because some communities failed to provide the needed zoning.

An apparent E. coli outbreak has been linked to a Mexican restaurant
in Litchfield Park. So far, 11 people have been hospitalized who ate food from
Frederico’s Mexican restaurant around July 23. Jeanene Fowler is with Maricopa
