Clinical Laboratory Scientist Shortage
2002 Interview with Judith Grout
( Phoenix, AZ )The health-care shortage has reached a critical mass -- especially in clinical laboratory science. These scientists run tests, for instance, on blood, to diagnose an illness. In December 2002, KJZZ's Abigail Beshkin reported on this shortage. Since then, the world's been exposed to SARS outbreaks and anthrax scares. Programs to train these workers are closing across the country. The University of Arizona plans to close ITS clinical laboratory science program in June. The American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science has designated this week to raise awareness of the shortage. State chapter president Judith Grout joins me to talk about the status of her profession.
