Phoenix hospitals will pay a new tax, under an ordinance approved Tuesday by the Phoenix City Council in a 6-3 vote. Supporters say it will bring in $200 million in federal money to help hospitals care for people without insurance.

The Arizona Court of Appeals has ruled that the body responsible for drawing legislative and congressional district maps has to follow the state’s open meeting laws, but that prosecutors cannot restart an investigation into whether that happened.

Law enforcement in Pinal County recovered thousands of rounds of ammunition in an abandoned SUV this weekend. A Pinal County Sheriff’s deputy patrolling near Stanfield on Saturday saw the car and ran its plates, and after discovering it had been reported stolen from Phoenix, tried to stop the SUV.

McCoy Tyner was encouraged to play piano by his mother and by his neighbor, Bud Powell.  By the time he was 17 he was playing with Coltrane in some local clubs in Philly.  Eventually they formed one of the finest jazz quartets ever recorded.

The Iraqi man charged with setting off a homemade bomb outside a Social Security office in Casa Grande has been indicted. Authorities say 47-year-old Abdullatif Ali Aldosary researched bomb making and gathered supplies before detonating the explosive last week.

The first Arizona marijuana medical dispensary opened its door Thursday in Glendale. It legally began distributing marijuana to the dozens of people who waited in line for hours to have their prescriptions filled.

Arizona’s first medical marijuana dispensary is scheduled to open Thursday morning in Glendale.This comes after a Maricopa County Superior court decision earlier this week cleared the way. The Arizona Marijuana Medical Act was approved by voters in the 2010 election.
