Jamie Cullum - Twentysomething

A young British piano player is generating a lot of heat on the jazz scene and with twentysomething listeners who don't even know who Miles Davis is.  Cullum  uses jazz harmony and a lot of melodic invention.  His lyrics are thoughtful, and his piano work is solid and smokin'.  When he does " I Get a Kick out of You" he jumps up and kicks the piano.  A little Jerry Lee Lewis, a la Bobby Darrin with a jazz flavor and enough talent to get a million dollar contract from Verve records. Besides standards like "Singing in the Rain," and "I could have Danced all Night"  he does Radiohead's "High and Dry" with a jazz trio, and Hendrix' "The Wind Cries Mary" with a B3 and a horn section.  He's being called Sinatra in sneakers, but he has his own sound.  It's explosive and young and acoustic and based right in the middle of the jazz tradition.    Hey, who said jazz can't be young and cute and wear sneakers.
