The Frank and Joe Show
Guitars and percussion play the gypsy swing of Django Reinhardt with a splash of tropical Mexico, it’s not Sonny Rollins but it is a fun summer CD. Guitarist Frank Vignola and drummer Joe Ascione did a hip groove CD, Goodfellas with Joey de Francesco and Frank recorded with fiddle master Mark O’Conner’s Hot Swing Trio. This CD has a faint undercurrent of both of those but the main feel is a unique summer sound. There are three percussionists, bass and two guitars covering everything from “That’s All” to Brahms “Hungarian Rhapsody #5” Joan Monheit steps in for a breath taking version of “Manhattan” and Janis Siegel does a delightful swinging take on “Glow Worm”. The whole feel of this CD is fun and lighthearted even the liner notes will make you chuckle, but the musicianship is serious and impeccable. The music will take you out of your routine and if it weren’t a moonlit summer night when you heard this, once you heard Frank and Joe play you’d think it was.
