A plane of women and children deported from the United States arrived in El Salvador on Thursday.

This week Fronteras Desk Senior Field Correspondents Jude Joffe-Block and Kate Sheehy are in El Salvador reporting on the child migrant crisis.

On Thursday morning they went to the airport in San Salvador to watch a plane arrive from the United States with deported women and children.

The plane contained nine women with nine children who had been held at a detention center in Artesia, N.M., according to Salvadoran government officials. There were also several women, without children, who had been detained in Texas.

While adult men are routinely deported from the U.S., this would be just the third plane of women and children flown to El Salvador.

Gang violence is one of the factors driving Salvadoran people to migrate, but that is not one of the categories for refugee status under international law, which was created after World War II.
