In a pair of Thursday afternoon tweets, Trump threatened to impose five percent tariffs on all goods entering from Mexico, “until such time as illegal migrants coming through Mexico, and into our Country, STOP.”

“The proposed Trump tariffs on Mexico are just a terrible idea,” said Glenn Hamer, head of the Arizona Chamber of Commerce and Industry. “Mexico is a friend and ally.”

He said the threat is particularly damaging because it came amid progress toward approval of a renegotiated NAFTA agreement.

Mexico is Arizona’s top trading partner — $346 billion worth of goods entered the U.S. from Mexico in 2018, $16 billion of which passed through Arizona ports of entry, according to federal data.
