Phoenix city council members will discuss the future of a police officer body-camera program at a Public Safety and Veterans Subcommittee meeting tonight. The group will be reviewing the results of a recent study as part of the dialogue.

The federally funded study was conducted by researchers at Arizona State University. It followed about 110 officers in the Maryvale precinct. Half of them were equipped with body cameras, the others were not.

In the end, researchers found the body cameras enhanced an officer’s ability to charge and prosecute domestic violence cases. The cameras also affected complaints against officers. The group that wore the cameras saw a 23 percent decline in complaints. Complaints against those in the comparison group, however, increased nearly 11 percent.

Tonight, the city council subcommittee will discuss expanding the program as well as the complexities involved with implementation.
