When someone goes to prison you expect them to be “locked up.” But a massive security breakdown at Arizona’s Lewis Prison led to multiple assaults on correctional officers last year.

The cell doors didn’t lock and they haven’t locked for some time. Despite the violent attack, the state’s corrections director, Charles Ryan, has yet to fix the problem.

Now Arizona House Democrats are calling for the resignation of Director Ryan. In a letter they sent to Gov. Ducey on Monday, they wrote, “Under Mr. Ryan's management, the Department of Corrections has become a dangerous place for state employees and contractors to work and equally unsafe for the inmates who are under the state's care in our prison system.”
