Maryvale has been without a central emergency room for more than a year since its hospital closed in 2017, leaving a big hole in the community. But now, Maricopa Integrated Health System (MIHS), the public teaching hospital and safety net system of care for Maricopa County, is stepping in.

This week, MIHS is reopening the Maryvale hospital, creating a new emergency department as well as a new in-patient behavioral health hospital for psychiatric patients.

Steve Purves is president and CEO of Maricopa Integrated Health System, and he said this fits right in with their mission to increase access to care — especially for vulnerable populations and for the underserved in the community.
