The busy holiday travel season along with the influx of tourists for the Valley’s bowl games means lots more flights and lots more noise. And for residents in the historic FQ Story neighborhood in Central Phoenix, it made for a particularly loud holiday weekend.  

Steve Dreiseszun has been dealing with noise from Sky Harbor since Sept. 18, when the Federal Aviation Administration modified some of its flight paths. So when the airport is busy like it was this weekend, Dreiseszun and his neighbors hear the effects.

"We pretty much had nonstop noise," Dreiseszun said. "Much of it during waking hours, much of it during the time where we want to enjoy the outdoors, you want to get the kids out, or you want to have some quiet time, and listen to music, all of those you might do around the holidays were certainly affected by the increased noise."

A Sky Harbor spokesperson said Sunday was the busiest travel day of the holiday season. Around 130,000 people came through the airport. On average the airport sees around 100,000 travelers.

As for residents in the FQ Story neighborhood, they’re still waiting to find out if the FAA will alter the existing flight paths.
