Governor Jan Brewer is asking the U.S. Supreme Court to block a lower court order that would grant drivers’ licenses to 20,000 young immigrants. The governor’s appeal was filed today.

The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled that Governor Brewer’s denial of driver's licenses to young immigrants now avoiding deportation under an Obama administration policy was unconstitutional.

Earlier this week, the 9th Circuit rejected her request to review its earlier decision. Brewer is now asking the U.S. Supreme Court to temporarily put on hold the lower court's decision blocking her denial. Without a stay, 20,000 young immigrants in Arizona who have received protection under the Obama policy are closer to getting licenses.

If the Supreme Court does not intervene, the state could have to begin issuing licenses to the  young immigrants as early as Dec. 16.
