Nogales to Vote Whether to Condemn Military Concertina Wire Border Project
The Nogales City Council will vote Wednesday night whether to condemn the now nearly completely enshrined border fence that separates this city from Mexico. The proposed resolution calls the concertina wire "lethal" and says it’s the kind of measure only used in war zones or prisons.
The resolution condemns a new U.S. military project this week that installed the concertina wire not only atop the 18-foot-high border fence downtown, but all the way down to the ground.
The military first strung up the concertina wire last fall amid fears asylum seekers would try to rush into the country over the barrier. Since then, the Pentagon has solicited bids from contractors to purchase $26 million to $46 million dollars worth of new concertina wire. Last Sunday, the Pentagon stated soldiers would erect another 160 miles of the wire between the border's ports of entry.
