Sports legend Muhammad Ali is being honored in Phoenix — a street will be renamed in his honor.

Dignity Health St. Joseph Hospital requested the name change for a street just north of Thomas Road. Merrell Street runs from Central Avenue to 3rd Avenue.

It’s a mix of public road and a private drive.

Phoenix City Council members approved changing the name from Merrell Street to Muhammad Ali Way. Dignity will pay for the new signs.

The Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center, which is part of Dignity Health’s campus, will be directly adjacent to the new “Muhammad Ali Way”.

At the age of 42, the legendary boxer was diagnosed with Parkinson’s, a progressive movement disorder with no cure. Ali died in Scottsdale two years ago at the age of 74.
