For the first time in 70 years, there is confirmation that a gray wolf has been spotted at the Grand Canyon. The female Rocky Mountain gray wolf has been roaming in the Kaibab National Forest.

Animal Conservationist Michael Robertson said the north rim had been the wolf’s home until the feds began exterminating the animals in the early 1900s and he hopes this female can spur a meaningful comeback of the species.

"We believe that the most important thing is to keep her protected and to keep her kin protected as well, so that natural reproduction and establishment of the population can take place," Robertson said.

Robinson says the Center for Biological Diversity is intervening to protect the animal, which is believed to have traveled hundreds of miles to get to the Grand Canyon.

He says scientists have identified the north rim of the canyon as one of the best remaining places for wolves.
