While travelers may not be able to drive from Arizona to Nevada on the Interstate 11 yet, wildlife in the area can travel freely thanks to a multi-state effort.

The Arizona Game and Fish department teamed up with Arizona Department of Transportation, the state of the Nevada and the Federal Highway Administration to design and build this crossing.

“If you didn’t put in wildlife crossings and fencing, then you would have, 1: these animals that are used to being on that mountain range they would be on the road getting hit by vehicles, which would cause a motor safety concern, or 2: they would be fragmented, so they couldn’t get across the new road,” said Arizona Game and Fish Biologist Jeff Gagnon.

Construction of the interstate has begun in Nevada, but Arizona has not announced when it will begin there.
