The South Phoenix light rail extension is moving forward after hitting a number of snags — including concerns that the voices of community residents and business owners weren’t being listened to.

The City Council’s 6-2 vote retains a two lane design, raising worries related to gentrification and redevelopment.

One of the votes in favor of the light rail plan earlier this week came from Mayor Thelda Williams.

The Show spoke with her for her reaction.

Light rail was also just one hot topic during Wednesday night’s mayoral debate.

The event was co-presented by the Downtown Voices Coalition, Midtown Neighborhood Association and the Phoenix Downtown Neighborhood Alliance.  KJZZ’s Christina Estes served as moderator and joined The Show to talk about the event.
