These decorative accents along the South Mountain Freeway are inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright's early work in Arizona, according to ADOT.

Drivers traveling along the Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway in Ahwatukee will see some artistic additions. That stretch of highway will now feature custom-designed panels resembling fins.

The new decorative accents stand atop the sound wall between 40th and 48th street. They’re painted a reddish accent color that also appears on retaining walls and bridge barriers in the area. More than 60 painted precast concrete fins will be placed periodically along the route.

When completed, the 22-mile South Mountain Freeway will provide a direct link between the East and West Valley and provide an alternative to I-10 in Phoenix.
