Many schools in Arizona are weeks away from starting the new school year. But the Chandler Unified School District, one of the state's largest school districts, started its academic year Monday.

Over 40,000 students attend Chandler schools. While students and parents are focusing on the upcoming year, Chandler police want the public to focus on safety surrounding the students.

Sergeant Daniel Mejia is with the Chandler Police Department. He said traffic is heavier during the first few weeks of school until parents establish routines in dropping off their kids.

"Obviously, a lot of these kids are new to their schools," Mejia said, "as well as parents and staff."

His tip on trying to navigate on those busy mornings: give yourself extra time.

"It's very important for people to leave a bit earlier if possible," Mejia said, "because there will be some delays and obviously when people are in a hurry that's when some tragedies occur."

Mejia reminds drivers to keep an eye out for children walking, biking and skateboarding to and from school, and also to follow school zone and bus restrictions.
