Phoenix Housing Department Gets $30 Million To Redevelop Public Housing
The Phoenix Housing Department has been awarded a $30 million grant to transform the Edison-Eastlake community.
The grant comes from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and it will be used to redevelop public housing near St. Luke’s Hospital and Edison Park. City of Phoenix Housing Director Cindy Stotler said it’s not just homes that are getting a makeover.
“We’re going to be able to do some things like put in some complete streets and some bike lanes and expand Edison park and add some amenities and some fitness trails and a lot of shade — things that the neighborhood has been lacking for a really long time,” Stotler said.
She said much of the housing in the area was built between 1942 and 1963 and is in need of modern utilities.
“The electrical grid is so old that we cannot add air conditioners or washer dryers to every apartment right now," Stotler said. "So that’s why you see the clothes lines and most of the folks in the barrack style homes are suffering under evaporative cooling.”
