Will Phoenix Be The Same After Driverless Cars Take Over?

Even after a pedestrian was tragically killed by an autonomous Uber vehicle, the Phoenix area continues to be a major focus of the driverless car industry. But for many, the Valley’s car culture is so ingrained that it’s hard to imagine a time when we just have autonomous cars everywhere.

It isn’t just we drivers as individuals, it’s how some of the major streets and neighborhoods of Phoenix are designed, and how many retail outlets are set up to fit comfortably with automobiles.

Ed Finn, director of the Center for Science and the Imagination at ASU, wrote the piece "Phoenix Will No Longer Be Phoenix if Waymo’s Driverless Car Experiment Succeeds" for MIT Technology Review.
