On Thursday afternoon, the Phoenix City Council approved entering into an agreement with the National Police Foundation to study officer-involved shootings.

There have been 28 officer-involved shootings in Phoenix so far this year.

Phoenix police Chief Jeri Williams talked about her support for the study on KJZZ’s The Show earlier Thursday.

“The ultimate goal is to create the dynamic where we have training, we have policies, we have practices, we have community members who believe in us and credibility is key and important. And to have the police foundation come in as that overreaching umbrella is going to be key," she said.

Williams said the foundation will analyze factors involved in shooting patterns over five to 10 years, but will not draw conclusions about the justification of using force.
