'Equality Voters' Push For Legislation, Fuel Initiatives And Mobilize Voters
They’re called Equality Voters — the bloc of LGBTQ voters and their allies who will fight anti-LGBTQ legislation and fuel pro-equality candidates and initiatives with their votes. It’s a larger portion of the electorate than you might think, and turning them out in 2018 has become the focus of a new campaign by LGBTQ civil rights organization Human Rights Watch.
At the same time, the Human Rights Campaign just released its annual 2018 Youth Report, which included more than 12,000 LGBTQ young people across the country. Its findings shed a light on the challenges that many of them face everyday.
77 percent of LGBTQ teenagers surveyed report feeling depressed over the past week. 70 percent report feelings of hopelessness or worthlessness, and only 26 percent said they feel safe in their school classrooms.
Perhaps most stark, nearly all — 95 percent — said they have trouble sleeping at night.
HRC President Chad Griffin was in the Valley to mobilize voters and volunteers here in the lead up to the 2018 midterm elections.
The Show sat down with him to talk more about both of these initiatives and what they found about LGBTQ youth here in Arizona in this new survey.
