Vista Peak School staff gathered to bring attention to low teacher pay on April 11, 2018, near the Deer Valley Unified School District office in north Phoenix.

Teachers in Arizona are poised to strike next Thursday if state legislators do not pass a budget that identifies a clear plan for salary increases for educators and support staff.

Deer Valley Unified School District announced it is closing all schools in anticipation of the strike.

Deer Valley schools will be closed beginning April 26. School Superintendent, Curtis Finch released a statement Saturday.

"After much consideration, I have determined that we will not have the necessary 75 percent of our certified staff reporting to school on the planned walkout day of Thursday April 26 to safely keep our schools open," Finch said.

All Deer Valley schools will be closed until they can be sure that 75 percent will return to work. Senior graduation, prom and other activities will continue as scheduled as long as the proper supervision requirements are met.
