Are school vocational programs failing some students with special needs?
Arizona Storytellers: Desiree Garcia
KJZZ is partnering with The Arizona Republic to bring you the Arizona Storytellers series. We record the live events and share them with you on the radio. In Phoenix, the storytellers share stories about our community or the life events that have shaped them. Megan Finnerty is the creator of the series.
Desiree Garcia grew up in Phoenix. She is the middle child of five and she and her siblings have always been close.
In 2005, when Desiree's youngest brother, Miguel, was 14, the family discovered he carried a concealed gun. At the time, they lived in an area that he said didn't feel safe and that’s why he had been carrying it. Desiree understood why he had it, but she still worried.
Desiree Garcia is a community leader in Phoenix.
The next Storytelling event is Jan. 24 at The Peoria Center for the Performing Arts in Peoria.
