A Maricopa County Sheriff’s Detention Officer has been ordered to stay home for three weeks after he visited an Ebola-stricken area of West Africa.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio said he took the action to protect other employees after the officer returned from a trip to Sierra Leone.

“The employees voiced a concern about this situation and said they would not work where he is until incubation period is over," Arpaio said.

The sheriff says the detention officer understands the situation and has been cooperative.

Arpaio says the officer was tested in two different airports and cleared to travel, but he says he was given a thermometer and told to self-monitor himself for the next three weeks.
