Ken Chenault will step down as the CEO of American Express early next year.

Chenault is one of only four African-American CEOs leading a Fortune 500 company. The number of CEOs of color was on the rise in 2001 when Chenault took over and reached a peak in 2007. But that momentum has seemingly stalled and the numbers have leveled off.

With me to examine that is Richard Zweigenhaft, psychology professor at Guilford College and author of "Diversity in the Power Elite."
