DuVal, Ducey Dodge Questions About Marijuana

The major party candidates for governor, Democrat Fred DuVal and Republican Doug Ducey finally agree on something. Neither wants to say whether he inhaled marijuana.

The question came on the heels of a state representative’s proposal to legalize recreational use of the drug, during the coming legislative session, rather than waiting for voters to decide the issue at the ballot box in 2016. Representative Ethan Orr said the state needs the tax money marijuana could bring in.

DuVal says he’s willing to consider the idea, after studying the experience of Washington and Colorado. But DuVal did not answer questions about his personal knowledge of the drug.

“Look, guys, let's focus on the important issues that face our state. We are dealing with significant budget issues, significant issues around job creation. We've got a K-12 system that needs our full attention. I want to focus on the issues that really matter," DuVal said.

Pressed on his personal use, DuVal said he had answered the question.

Ducey says he’s against both Orr’s plan to approve recreational pot legislatively and the ballot initiative. But he is equally dismissive about his own drug use.

“I'm opposed to the legalization of marijuana and that's where I stand. Thank you," Ducey said.

And that’s when his press aide Melissa DeLaney led Ducey away from a crowd of reporters.
