The Arizona Department of Education says it’s working to determine how to reallocate Title I funding that was improperly distributed. The agency expects to have a final plan by the spring.

Title I funding is federal assistance provided to schools with a large population of kids from low income families.

According to a report and data analyzed by the Arizona Center for Investigative Reporting, the Arizona Department of Education wrongly allocated about $62 million of Title I aid. That broke down to more than $46 million of over allocation and nearly $15 million that was under allocated.

The department reportedly became aware of the issue in 2015 and fixed the problem in early 2017. An agency spokesman said final resolution details are still being ironed out but added they’re optimistic that federal officials won’t decide to penalize schools that received too much funding.
